Ivan, a Conley student from Russia, arrived in the US two years ago; he knew no English. He worked hard to learn the language. He participated in the Tropicana Speech Contest with a topic of 'how smiles can change the world.' He thought it would brighten up the hearts of the bullies at his school. He came in first place at Conley and then went on to compete at hte District level against 56 other kids.
